A Syrian asylum seeker suspected of being an ISIS member has been arrested after a deadly knife attack at a festival in Germany, leaving three dead and eight injured.
German authorities have arrested a 26-year-old Syrian asylum seeker on suspicion of carrying out a brutal knife attack that left three people dead and eight others injured at a festival in Solingen, western Germany. The suspect, believed to be a member of ISIS, turned himself in to police and has admitted to the crime, according to a spokesperson for the German federal prosecutor.
The attacker targeted festival-goers in Solingen on Friday night, focusing his assaults on their necks in what police described as “very targeted” attacks. The Islamic State group later claimed responsibility for the incident, referring to the suspect as a “soldier of the Islamic State” on their Telegram channel. The group stated that the attack was carried out “in revenge for Muslims in Palestine and everywhere.”
The suspect, who reportedly arrived in Germany in late 2022 and sought asylum, had been living in a refugee shelter in Solingen, which was searched by police on Saturday. North Rhine-Westphalia’s interior minister, Herbert Reul, confirmed the suspect’s connection to the Islamic State.
The attack occurred during a city festival in Solingen, approximately 25 kilometers from Düsseldorf. The event, which began on Friday and was scheduled to continue through the weekend, was abruptly canceled following the tragedy. The victims included two men, aged 67 and 56, and a 56-year-old woman.
In the aftermath of the attack, a 15-year-old was also arrested for allegedly failing to report an imminent crime. The incident has shocked the local community and raised concerns about security at public events in Germany.
