Italy and Brazil: CEO Cattaneo confirms Enel’s commitment during Mattarella’s visit to Lula

Brazil confirms itself as one of the most important countries in the Group’s strategy, as demonstrated by Enel’s involvement during President Sergio Mattarella’s State Visit to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Representing the company in Brasilia were CEO Flavio Cattaneo, External Relations Director Nicolò Mardegan and Antonio Scala, Country Manager Brazil.

This occasion further sealed the renewed relationship of trust between the Group and the South American country and followed the positive experience of the G7, when Enel met President Lula da Silva and Brazilian Minister for Mines and Energy Alexandre Silveira, in the presence of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, after numerous meetings with Brazilian authorities in recent months. The Group’s participation in President Mattarella’s institutional visit confirms the company’s strategic role in Italy’s geopolitics, as part of a public-private control room working for the development of the Country System.

The pride of representing Italy in the world ,’ reads a note from Enel, ‘ also passes through Brazil, where our CEO Flavio Cattaneo participated in the state visit of President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, welcomed in Brasilia by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. It was an opportunity to further consolidate the relationship with the country, after the positive experience of the #G7Italy last month. Italian technology and know-how ,’ the note concludes, ’ will also create a positive and lasting impact in Brazil. Vision and concreteness are our distinctive element. Our way of representing Italy in the world’.

The 2024-2026 Industrial Plan, presented last November and the first of the current management, is a concrete sign of this commitment. In fact, the investments dedicated to Brazil amount to approximately USD 3.7 billion, a 45% increase compared to the approximately USD 2.5 billion planned in the previous three-year period.

In the Brazilian networks, in particular, with the new Plan, the increase in capex compared to the past is 75% (USD 2.9 billion in the period 2024-26 compared to USD 1.6 billion previously forecast in the 2023-25 Plan). Following the extreme weather events that caused disruptions to electricity service in parts of the concession areas in 2023, we have confirmed our commitment through a plan that includes not only significant growth in investment in quality and resilience, but also a significant increase in the workforce.

During the first day of the State Visit, Enel’s CEO also confirmed his commitment to energy transition in the presence of the two Heads of State: together with Antonio Jose de Almeida Meirelle, Rector of the Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP), a centre of academic and technological excellence in the energy sector, he signed a scientific-technological partnership to promote initiatives focused on transition and the predictability of extreme climate events, as well as training, research and development activities.
