Suspect’s Notebook Reveals Detailed Plan and Manifesto Criticizing Health Insurance Industry
Luigi Mangione, a 26-year-old Ivy League graduate, has been charged with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Authorities discovered a spiral notebook in Mangione’s possession outlining a meticulous plan for the assassination, along with a manifesto condemning the health insurance industry’s practices.
The incident occurred on December 4 outside a Hilton Hotel in Manhattan, where Thompson was attending an investor conference. Mangione allegedly approached Thompson and fatally shot him before fleeing the scene. He was apprehended days later in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after being recognized at a McDonald’s restaurant.
Forensic evidence has linked Mangione to the crime. Fingerprints found on a water bottle near the crime scene match Mangione’s, and a firearm recovered during his arrest corresponds with shell casings from the scene.
Mangione’s manifesto reportedly criticizes the health insurance industry for prioritizing profits over patient care. Friends and acquaintances describe him as a compassionate individual who became increasingly isolated due to chronic back pain and frustrations with denied insurance claims.
Currently held without bail, Mangione faces charges including second-degree murder and firearm possession. He is contesting extradition to New York. His attorney argues that there is insufficient evidence linking him to the crime.
The assassination has ignited discussions about the U.S. healthcare system, with public sentiment reflecting deep-seated frustrations over denied claims and high costs.
